Well if you had asked me if I had ever heard of Appalachian Spring I would say no, but as soon as I played it, I started singing John Rutter’s “Lord of the Dance,” It took me back to the school hall, a very happy time and place.
The Pastoral Symphony always takes me back to childhood. It was my favourite sequence in Fantasia! Copland is always the sound of America for me too. I love the way that his music evokes wide open prairies.
Beethoven is the One—For me, anyway. He cracks the code, breaks the norms, changes the dynamic structure. You have admirably highlighted this truth about the 6th. He does it every time, something different in every symphony. It’s never subtle.
I have put in my living will I want to die listening to Beethoven. I want to float up to the ether in spirit and never look back because I can feel the vibration of anything and everything through me, through him.
So I am ever, ever thankful for Beethoven.
I am thankful for good food. Growing it, preparing it. If food is your life, you are truly gifted.
I am having trouble this year as well. I am considering anything made by systems to be ‘important’ questionable. It all seems very thin—Hallmark Holidays being told when to celebrate what have always bothered me anyway. We should celebrate the goodness of things as they come, and the safety we enjoy when we have it… Not on designated days. The rebel in me usually does some work project, creative in nature, I can take away as accomplished to remember on that holiday. Then I rest the next day.
Thank you for this list! It will be my background music for painting my living room and dining room this week. Color and sound, light and love to all—holiday or not!
Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment. I totally agree about Beethoven. Took me a little while to fully appreciate (and there’s always more to discover) how innovative, daring and versatile his music is, and how relevant it still feels.
I know so many people who are struggling this year. I think, as obvious as it is, knowing other people feel the same, makes it just a bit lighter. And we have music to keep us company, mirror our thoughts and cheer us up!

Never heard Lord of the dance before but it’s so cute. And yup, same tune!
I also best know the Shaker tune as Lord of the Dance! Good old school assemblies haha!
Did you see the guy who does ‘Old School Bangers’? He did a live assembly at Glastonbury this year. Wish I’d been there!
Yeah I know who you mean! I was at Glasto but I didn't see him.
I, for one, am very grateful for this newsletter educating me week on week!
Oh stop… 🥹

Couldn’t agree more!
Aaron Copeland is a perfect Thanksgiving pick! I love the folk tunes woven in.
Totally, really feels festive and so American in the best possible way.
